Skin surgery is usually office-type surgery performed under local anesthesia or possibly with mild sedation and local anesthesia. There is frequently minimum disability or work loss. The common diseases which require surgery are: moles, cysts, ingrown hairs, lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and skin tags. Occasionally skin tumors arise and require complete excision. These are called basal cell or squamous cell cancers and are cured by complete, thorough removal. One of the skin cancers which is difficult is malignant melanoma (a darkly pigmented and irregular shaped skin mole.) This requires not only complete and wider removal than other skin cancers but depending on its size may require surgery on the nearby lymph glands as this tumor (when large) frequently spreads to local glands.
