This method of approach in surgery requires general anesthesia, introductions of carbon monoxide (CO2) and specialized instruments. The instruments are known as trocaps, graspers, clip appliers and most importantly, the laparoscope. The laparoscope is a specialized ocular device with fiberoptic technology allowing "cold light" to enlighten the abdomen to serve (with the attached TV monitor) as the surgeon's "eyes."
The advent of this laparoscopic technology has allowed certain operations to be performed with small incisions, easier recovery, less discomfort and greater safety. Although a wonderful breakthrough, it is not able to be used in all cases. The decision as to its use or not is based on the disease entity, the surgeons judgement and the patient's wishes.
