Dr. Robert J. Silich, M.D., F.A.C.S.


Dr. Robert J. Silich, M.D., F.A.C.S. has been practicing medicine on Staten Island for over 30 years. He was born in Jersey City, N.J. on October 10, 1941. Dr. Silich graduated from Weehawken High School and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1963. Dr. Silich received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from New York Medical College in 1967, where he was named to the Dean’s list in 1966 and in 1967. In July of 1968, Dr. Silich received his New York State Medical License and also became a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He completed his surgical residency at Staten Island University Hospital in 1972, serving as Chief Resident from July 1969 - June 1972.
The residency in surgical training included rotational services with personal attention in Urology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Dr. Silich’s surgical training continued with post-graduate courses in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1971 and 1972.

Dr. Silich then served in the United States Navy in the rank of Lieutenant Commander at the Charleston, South Carolina Naval Regional Medical Center from June 1972 - June 1974 as Staff Surgeon. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in November, 1973 and was the Acting Chief of Surgical Service at St. Albans Naval Hospital in 1974.

After completion of his military duty, Dr. Silich began his private practice on Staten Island in 1974, specializing in all areas of General Surgery including, but not limited to: Breast Surgery, Gallbladder and Appendix Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery (Esophagus, Stomach, Small Bowel, Colon and Rectum), Hernia Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Liver, Spleen and Pancreas Surgery, Skin Surgery, Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery as well as performing Tracheostomies.

Dr. Silich has established himself as a leader in General Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery here in the United States and abroad. In 1976, Dr. Silich became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and in 1977, he became a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Silich’s recognition in his specialized field is unparalleled. Dr. Silich is presently the Director of Surgical Oncology at Staten Island University Hospital, a position he has held for over 10 years (since 1989). He has been elected to three straight 3-year terms as the Cancer Liasion of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for Staten Island University Hospital (1992-1995; 1995-1998; 1998-2001).

In 1994, Dr. Silich was honored as the Keynote Guest Speaker on Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery at the 2nd International Congress of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery in Madrid, Spain. In 1997, Dr. Silich was honored as the Keynote Guest Speaker at the Far Eastern Symposium on Breast Cancer at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. And in 1998, Dr. Silich was invited to be a Guest Speaker at the Annual Symposium on Critical Issues in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in St. Jean Cap Ferrat, France.

During his years in practice, Dr. Silich has published over 100 publications in medical literature, journals and textbooks in General Surgery. Besides being an author and lecturer, Dr. Silich spends a great deal of his time educating, training and overseeing the surgical training of medical students, residents and peers. Dr. Silich is the Chairman of the Surgical Quality Assurance (Performance Improvement) Committee, a position he has held since 1990. He is also the Associate Director of the Surgical Training Program (since 1989) and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital (since 1997). In addition, Dr. Silich holds academic appointments as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at SUNY- Downstate Medical Center and at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Silich has memberships in many scientific national and international societies including: the Fellow American College of Surgeons, the Fellow International College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, the Richmond County Medical Society, the Richmond County Academy of Medicine as a Charter/Founding Member, the United States Chapter of the Society Internationale de Chirurgie, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the New York Celtic Medical Society, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the National Surgical Adjuvant of Breast and Bowel Projects and the Fellow American Board of Quality Assurance, Utilization Review Physicians.

Dr. Silich was named "Man of the Year: Physician and Humanitarian" by the Staten Island Heart Foundation. He was also given the "Recognition Award as Man of the Year" by the American Cancer Society, was inducted as an "Honorable Member of the Honor Legion" by the Police Department of the City of New York" and was awarded the "Certificate of Appreciation" by the White House Medical Unit for his outstanding support provided during the President of the United States’ visit to Staten Island in 1998.

Recently, he was voted "Teacher of the Year for the Department of Surgery" at Staten Island University Hospital and he has been named one of the "Best Doctors in New York" by New York Magazine and by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.’s "How to Find the Best Doctors - New York Metro Guide."

In addition, Dr. Silich received the "National Leadership Award" by the National Republican Congressional Committee for his commitment to excellence in the health care profession.

As of January 1, 2001, Dr. Silich has performed over 35,000 surgical operations.

Dr. Silich currently resides on Staten Island, New York with his wife, Dianne. Their two sons, Robert Christopher and Stephan John, reside in Manhattan.
